Hello! My name is Avis Calhoun (she/her) and I am pleased to be working with Home Psych Services, P.C.!   I am a registered Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) in the State of Illinois. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.) in Psychology and Sociology from Ashford University and my Master of Arts degree (M.A.) in Counseling with specialization in Forensic Psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology.

I have experience in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, Play Therapy, Trauma-Focused Therapy, and Crisis Intervention therapeutic methods. My professional background is working with clients struggling with traumatic stress disorders, substance use disorders, self-harm, and mood disorders. I have over eight (8) years of experience working with the Cook County Sheriff Department and incarcerated individuals in a forensic setting at the Cook County Department of Corrections (CCDOC) and Cook County Health in Chicago, IL. I also have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families in community health, residential treatment centers, online intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), and a hospital setting with outpatient/inpatient
treatment. I have a strong background working with adolescents and adults in the LGBTQIA+ community specializing in gender trauma and other traumas associated within the LGBTQIA+ community facilitating group therapy and individual sessions.

As a Therapist, my belief is that rapport and honesty is important to establishing a trusting and autonomous therapist-client relationship. I am enthusiastic about destigmatizing mental health, boosting cultural
awareness within mental health, working with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) programming, and incorporating telehealth technology in mental health to reach those that typically do not have access to therapy.  I provide teletherapy services for Home Psych Services, P.C. and Generations Behavioral Healthcare, P.C. using secure video teleconferencing for the comfort, convenience, added privacy, and safety of my clients.

I was born and raised in Chicago, IL and currently reside in the western suburbs of Chicago, IL with my husband of 26 years, 3 kids, and our 15 year old Shih Tzu. In my free time, I enjoy music, dancing, crocheting, reading, movies, and traveling.
